Part 1 / 3

Labor, materials and scope

Start a quote comparison with the same written problem description and photos for every contractor. Separate diagnosis, proposed work, materials, labor, and cleanup.

Record what each quote excludes. A total without a clear scope is not a reliable like-for-like comparison.

Part 2 / 3

Questions to ask contractors

Ask who handles permits where needed, who performs the work, and how unexpected conditions will be documented and approved.

Request written warranty terms, payment milestones, and an explanation of how the completed repair will be checked. Verify applicable licensing and insurance.

Part 3 / 3

Budgeting and quote comparison

Keep known quoted costs separate from uncertain allowances and future maintenance. Ask whether diagnostic charges, removal, disposal, taxes, and follow-up visits are included.

Do not estimate savings from an unsupported equipment-life assumption. Do not dismantle equipment or attempt hazardous trade work to reduce a quote; request clarification or another qualified assessment instead.

When to call a professional

Stop if you notice a safety hazard, water near energized equipment, signs of combustion or gas problems, or anything requiring a licensed trade. Do not attempt repairs beyond your training. Manufacturer instructions and local requirements take priority.

Editorial note: This guide is educational. Costs, service intervals, and troubleshooting steps vary by home, equipment, location and applicable code.
